Detection Alarm

NAVIGATION: Settings (gear icon), Detection Alarm.

Detection of people, vehicles and other things is performed automatically by the "smart camera" using artificial intelligence.
However, there are three categories of manual adjustments you can make to help the camera be "smarter" about detecting things:

  • Detection Zone

  • Sensitivity

  • Object Size

Detection Zone

Navigate to the Settings page for your camera and click Detection Alarm, then click Detection Zone.

The default is for the camera to detect motion for the entire picture of both cameras.

This option allows you to define areas that are excluded from the detection process. The camera will not detection motion in the areas that are "painted".

If you have large areas of a picture that do not need motion detection or areas that include leafy trees that could cause incorrect detection, it can be helpful to "paint" that area so it will be excluded from the detection process. This will help the camera avoid identifying motion as a vehicle or person when there really is no vehicle or person.

This screenshot shows an example where the leafy parts of the trees have been painted and the area where people and vehicles will be has not been painted.

Sensitivity

Navigate to the Settings page for your camera and click Detection Alarm, then click Sensitivity.


Important. The Motion Detection setting determines how sensitive the camera is to motion. Both cameras use the same setting.
A lower value means it takes more motion in the picture to make the camera decide something is actually moving.
A higher value means it takes less motion in the picture to make the camera decide something is actually moving.

For most situations, it seems best to set this to "High (50)" and let the Smart Detection figure out if the motion is a person or a vehicle.

There is also the option to set different sensitivity levels for different hours of the days. I have not seen a good reason to do this for AwareNet.

Important. The Smart Detection option allows you to set:

  • The sensitivity for identifying motion as a person.

  • The sensitivity for identifying motion as a vehicle.

A lower number means something that moves must look more like a person/vehicle to be identified as a person/vehicle.

A higher number means something that moves can look less like a person/vehicle to be identified as a person/vehicle.

For most situations, it seems best to set the Person Motion to "Mid (60)" so the camera will identify motion as a person even when it has a moderate resemblance to a person. If the camera is saving too many clips that it says has a person but there is no person (a false positive), then decrease this setting 5 points.

For most situations, it seems best to set the Vehicle Motion to "Low (20)" so the camera will identify motion as a vehicle only when it has a high resemblance to a vehicle. If the camera is saving too many clips that it says has a vehicle but there is no vehicle (a false positive), then decrease this setting 5 points.

Object Size

Optional. The Smart Detection setting allows you to set:

  • The minimum and maximum size that will be considered to be a person.

  • The minimum and maximum size that will be considered to be a vehicle.

Each camera has separate settings.

We have not found any situation where this is needed to get good detection results.
