Gmail App Password Setup
(for sending alert emails from
your camera to AwareNet)
By default, Gmail (and most email services) now requires use of "OAuth 2.0" to access the email account from a third-party application (e.g. the email app on your smartphone).
However, apps that don't support OAuth can use an alternative called "application password", which means you are creating a special password for just one specific app (e.g. a security camera app).
For example, the Reolink smartphone app does not support Oauth so you need to create an app password in your Gmail account to use with the Reolink app instead of your regular Gmail password. Gmail provides step-by-step instructions to do this. Please note, you MUST first turn on 2-Step Verification for your Gmail account BEFORE you can create an app password.
Below are the Gmail setup steps as they were as of June of 2021. The steps should be similar for other email services (search for "application password" in the email service help section).
Step 2 - Sign in to your gmail account.
Step 3 - Click the "Security" menu option
On the main google account page, click the "Security" menu option.
Step 4 - Turn on 2-Step Verification
Locate the section "Signing in to Google".
If your 2-Step Verification is "off", click 2-Step Verification and follow the instructions to turn it on , otherwise, skip to Step 5.
Step 5 - Click "App passwords".
Location the section "Signing in to Google".
If your 2-Step Verification is "on", click that option and look for "App passwords" at the very bottom of the list of 2-Step Verification options.
Step 6 - Click the "Select app" dropdown.
Step 7 - Enter name for App Password.
Enter the name of your security camera smartphone app (e.g. Reolink).
Step 8 - Click the "Generate" button.
Click the "Generate" button.
Return to your security camera smartphone app and enter this app password as the password for your email account.
